Reflections from Gestalt Africa Leadership Program in Accra, Ghana

Dear friends,

Last month, I embarked on a profound journey of self-discovery and leadership transformation through the Gestalt Africa Leadership Program (GALP), a yearlong immersion in Afrocentric Gestalt Organization Development. The program spans 12 months, taking place in three different African countries, and aims to immerse participants in Gestalt organizational and leadership approaches.

As an organization development practitioner deeply committed to reimagining the future of leadership and organizations, I had grown disenchanted with westernized approaches that often prioritized individualism over collectivism and approached problem-solving through a narrow and reductionist lens. Given my work in organizations, particularly in systems, change, and diversity, equity, and inclusion, I had been yearning for a framework that acknowledges the profound interconnectedness of all things within complex systems. Moreover, I sought an approach that placed self-awareness at its core, recognizing that the inner self of the leader is crucial and inseparable from how one leads. In this quest, I discovered the beauty of Gestalt.

The inaugural session of Gestalt Africa took place in Accra, Ghana, in October. Gestalt, derived from German, means “form” or “shape.” It is a psychological approach that invites us to perceive and understand the entirety of a situation rather than analyzing isolated parts. In the context of leadership and organization development, Gestalt principles encourage leaders to embrace a holistic perspective, recognizing the intricate web of connections within systems. It underscores the importance of self-awareness as an essential element of effective leadership.

The GALP experience was a blend of presentations, immersive experiences, small group discussions, personal reflection, and moments of play, all intended to nurture self-awareness and explore our work within an African-centric context. Throughout the program, the six seasoned facilitators who guided us were deeply steeped in Gestalt principles. Their expertise and unwavering support were instrumental in leading us through various exercises and activities, enriching our learning experience and contributing to our personal and professional growth. Their guidance, coupled with the program’s dynamic and interactive approach, fostered collaboration, networking, and the exchange of ideas among group participants.

African-Centered Leadership

There were numerous insightful experiences throughout the week, and I anticipate sharing more about them in the coming weeks. However, one of the most poignant moments for me was a talk given by a beloved guest, Nana Dr. S. K. B. Asante, a highly respected chief, scholar, lawyer, and elder statesman. In the Twi language of Ghana, “Nana” simply means “Grace” or “Elder.” Nana shared his wisdom with us during a session entitled “African Ways of Being, Organizing, and Leading.” His very presence illuminated the core essence of the program, which is the integration of traditional African leadership principles into contemporary leadership.

Nana emphasized the importance of inclusion and consensus building, pillars of African leadership. He spoke passionately about collective action – a leader’s concern extends beyond themselves to the collective. Traditional African wisdom respects the principles of natural justice, ensuring fairness and harmony, which are paramount in African societies.

GALP’s Afrocentric focus was central. The program’s interactive and practical approach, deeply rooted in Gestalt principles, encouraged us to reflect on our individual and collective realities. It fostered collaboration, networking, and the exchange of ideas among participants from diverse backgrounds. This dynamic cross-cultural interaction enriched our learning experience, offering us a profound understanding of African leadership that transcends borders and fosters unity.

Although we did not explicitly discuss the African concept of Ubuntu during the program, I couldn’t help but see its principles manifesting in our interactions. Ubuntu, often summarized by the phrase “I am because we are,” emphasizes the interconnectedness of humanity and the importance of community and mutual support. In our journey of self-discovery and growth, we acknowledged that our vulnerabilities and emotions are not weaknesses but pathways to greater understanding and development. This shared perspective created a sense of unity and collective growth we fostered within our diverse group of participants, reinforcing the idea that our success as leaders is not solely based on our individual accomplishments but on the positive impact we have on our communities and our ability to nurture growth together as a collective.

Reflections on Global Implications of Leadership and Organization

My journey with the Gestalt Africa Leadership Program (GALP) has reinforced and validated the profound implications of leadership in a global context. While I have long been aware of the complex and dynamic nature of leadership, GALP has deepened my understanding of how it extends far beyond the confines of any single organization.

In a world marked by intricate geopolitical tensions, ongoing conflicts such as those in Israel and Ukraine, and a rapidly evolving global political landscape, the role of effective leadership cannot be underestimated. GALP has provided me with a unique opportunity to explore these dynamics, allowing me to appreciate the interconnectedness of leadership, organizations, and the broader global context.

My experience in GALP has reaffirmed that leadership today demands a holistic perspective—one that recognizes the far-reaching impact of our actions. This program has validated the notion that leadership goes beyond managing organizations; it involves influencing and shaping societies, economies, and international relations. It’s about embracing diversity, fostering inclusivity, and cultivating empathy on a global scale.

GALP’s immersion in Afrocentric Gestalt principles and the wisdom of traditional African leadership has further reinforced my belief that effective leadership contributes to positive global change. As an organization development practitioner, I see the convergence of these principles with my existing knowledge, creating a powerful framework for guiding organizations through an era where leadership’s impact knows no borders.

My Oh Shit Moment – A Journey of Self-Discovery and Healing

I remember pleading – oh God, please don’t let me have a breakdown in Ghana!

Through several group activities, I had profound moments of self-discovery, ones that led me to confront an old wound that had long lain dormant within me. This wound was deep, and it called for my attention in a way that I had not anticipated. As I engaged in the program and interacted with fellow participants, I found myself face to face with emotions that had resurfaced – the scars of old wounds unexpectedly came to the surface.

It was a moment of reckoning, a confrontation with the past, and a realization that my effectiveness as a leader and coach hinged upon my ability to investigate and, in some cases, lovingly interrogate the interiors of my heart and mind. By confronting these emotions head-on, by being vulnerable and open with myself, I began the process of addressing and attending to these old wounds.

During this process, there were moments when I found myself self-criticizing and judging my emotions and feelings. However, I learned that there is no transformational value in self-criticism or in accepting judgment and criticism from others. Instead, this experience reaffirmed the importance of self-compassion and the understanding that our vulnerabilities are not weaknesses but pathways to greater understanding and growth.

In the context of Gestalt principles, this process involved engaging with my emotions, allowing them to surface, and truly understanding their origins and their impact on my present. In a world that often teaches us to compartmentalize and suppress our feelings, Gestalt encourages us to embrace our emotions as a means of self-discovery and growth. By acknowledging and working through these emotions, I not only heal myself but also enhance my effectiveness as a leader, coach, and facilitator.

The old wound that had beckoned for my attention became a catalyst for personal growth and healing. It reminded me that vulnerability is a source of strength and that by confronting our past and embracing our authentic selves, we can become more empathetic leaders and coaches.

Gestalt principles, with their emphasis on holistic self-awareness and exploration, provided me with the tools and insights needed to navigate this journey of self-discovery and healing.  What I thought was a potential breakdown became a welcomed breakthrough, illuminating a path to personal and professional growth that I had not anticipated.

The Gestalt Africa Leadership Program provided me with a profound opportunity to engage with Gestalt principles on a deeply personal level. It was a journey of self-discovery, healing, and growth that highlighted the transformative power of embracing our emotions and vulnerabilities.

As leaders and coaches, it is through our own journeys of self-awareness and self-compassion that we can better guide and support others on their paths of transformation and development.

COLLABORATIONS & ENDURING FRIENDSHIPS

Beyond the knowledge gained and skills honed, this experience gifted me with enduring friendships. Through this experience, I had the privilege of connecting with like-minded individuals who share my passion for holistic leadership and a profound appreciation for the rich tapestry of African traditions. Together, we stand on the precipice of change, equipped with the wisdom of the past and the resilience to navigate the complex challenges of our world.

As a group, we will participate in virtual sessions. We have also established small personal growth groups that will become sanctuaries for intimate discussions, self-reflection, and mutual learning. Here, we initiate positive changes in various aspects of our lives, drawing from the diverse perspectives within our community. We also established Application groups where members serve as valuable accountability partners, motivating and supporting each other as we implement and experiment with newly acquired skills and processes within our respective roles. This program offers an immersive experience, providing continuous support to each participant.

I’m eagerly looking forward to our next in-person session in Cape Town, South Africa, in March. To learn more about Gestalt Africa and their programs, please visit their website here

I look forward to sharing more with you soon!

Go Well,
Thulani

Team Effectiveness & Collaboration

Teams are living systems,  interconnected, relational, and dynamic. When trust, clarity, and well-being are present, teams are able to collaborate with purpose and sustain high performance. Our approach helps leaders and teams realign, and strengthen the foundations that matter most: shared vision, open communication, psychological safety, and collective accountability.

Through a blend of evidence-based practices and reflective dialogue, participants learn to foster connection, navigate complexity, and support one another in ways that enhance both individual and collective effectiveness.

Delivery Options

Visioning & Strategic Forcasting

This work begins with listening. Instead of forcing outcomes, we invite leaders and teams into a reflective process to notice what is emerging — what is asking to be expressed through the team and organization so that it fulfills its highest mission.

We are living in a time of profound disruption and uncertainty. Political, social, and economic shifts are reshaping the landscape in which organizations operate. Many organizations are re-evaluating who they are, what they stand for, and how they want to show up in the world. Visioning and foresight offer a way to make sense of these dynamics and respond with clarity and creativity.

Through guided visioning, futures thinking, and foresight practices such as backcasting and scenario exploration, participants learn to recognize patterns, anticipate change, and discern what is most vital to bring forward. Based on the work of Otto Scharmer and Peter Senge at MIT, this process is emergent, adaptive, and creative — more about discovery than prescription.

We love this work because it is an exciting journey we take with clients. By approaching vision and strategy in this way, organizations cultivate the ability to sense into the future, align around what truly matters, and respond with clarity and agility to the complexity of their environment.

Energy Management
& Flow

High performance is not about squeezing more into the day, it is about managing energy with intention. Drawing on the work of Dr. Jim Loehr, who introduced the concept of the Corporate Athlete, and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, whose research on flow shows how people achieve peak states of focus and creativity, this offering helps leaders and teams operate at their very best.

Energy is multidimensional;  physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. When individuals and teams learn to renew and channel energy across these dimensions, they reduce burnout, improve resilience, and access flow states where performance feels effortless. This offering  integrates mindfulness, nutrition, and energy management practices to help teams sustain focus, well-being, and results in today’s demanding environments.

Delivery Options

  • One or Two Day Team Retreat

  • Consulting Engagement

  • Individual or Group Coaching

Mindfulness Based Change Management

Change is inevitable, but how we meet it makes all the difference. Too often, organizational transitions create stress, resistance, and disengagement. Mindfulness offers another path. By cultivating self-awareness and presence, leaders and teams are able to slow down, notice reactions, and approach disruption with openness and curiosity rather than fear.

Mindfulness builds the resilience needed to navigate uncertainty. When teams learn to pause, reflect, and engage more consciously, they begin to see change not as a threat, but as an opportunity for growth and renewal.

Cultural Humility & Belonging

Organizations thrive when people feel safe, valued, and respected for who they are. Cultural humility goes beyond compliance or surface-level diversity efforts — it is an ongoing practice of reflection, openness, and accountability that fosters authentic belonging.

Our approach helps organizations cultivate cultures of psychological safety, cultural humility, and trust. We partner with leaders and teams to uncover hidden dynamics, shift behaviors, and embed practices that allow every voice to contribute fully. The result is stronger collaboration, higher engagement, and systems that reflect equity in action.

Delivery Options

  • Consulting Engagement
We provide strategies for creative implementation of cultural humility, including reviewing and updating organizational policies, HR materials, onboarding practices, and equity-centered frameworks. We also design customized tools such as updated glossaries, resource guides, and communication templates that reflect inclusive language and belonging.

  • Coaching
Individual and group coaching for leaders and teams.

  • Workshops & Trainings
Engaging sessions to introduce core concepts of cultural humility, psychological safety, and belonging, while equipping participants with practical skills to apply immediately in their work.

Organizational Capacity Building

Organizations, like living systems, thrive when their structures, people, and processes work in harmony. Capacity building is not about quick fixes — it is about strengthening the roots of the organization so it can adapt, grow, and remain sustainable. Our approach helps leaders and teams examine organizational systems, align strategy with culture, and identify opportunities to expand both effectiveness and resilience.

Delivery Options

  • Consulting Engagement
Comprehensive support to design and implement strategies for capacity building, including leadership development, systems alignment, and process improvement.

Thulani.com

Corporate Presence Plus

This was Thulani’s first website, created in 2000 as an online home for her business in corporate wellness and stress management. The site provided resources for stress reduction, including free downloads. It served as a basic site to market services and share practical wellness tools with clients.

Back in those days, we took great pride in the design process. Design was not an afterthought, it was central. Many of the websites from the late 1990s and early 2000s were crafted by true designers and artists who paid careful attention to detail, balance, and readability.

People took their time with design, and people read. By contrast, much of today’s WordPress world has traded rich content and thoughtful reading experiences for oversized images and quick scrolling.

Impact
Made stress management tools and resources more accessible to organizations and individuals during the early digital era, while modeling a standard of design excellence that shaped Thulani’s future approach to digital projects.

That’s why we intentionally track progress and evaluate the effectiveness of every engagement. Using a range of assessment tools and feedback methods, we measure growth over time—not just in performance metrics, but in the overall health, well-being, and cohesion of teams.

This offering supports leaders and teams in cultivating a more intentional, balanced relationship with technology. Using a mindfulness-based approach, we help individuals engage with digital tools in ways that reduce stress, prevent burnout, and foster presence. With a doctoral concentration in media technology and innovation, Dr. Thulani DeMarsay brings a deep understanding of how technology shapes modern work and well-being. She has led technology initiatives across mid-sized and large organizations to help them better serve their mission—while also witnessing firsthand how constant digital engagement can lead to overload and disconnection.

Through this work, we guide teams in rethinking their digital habits, using tech more mindfully, and creating a culture of clarity, focus, and purpose.

Energy & Flow for Sustainable Leadership

We see energy and flow as essential for sustainable, effective leadership—and for how individuals show up in every aspect of life. This offering is grounded in the science of flow by Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and the research of Dr. Jim Loehr, co-author of The Power of Full Engagement. It’s inspired by the idea of the “corporate athlete,” acknowledging that today’s leaders often work long hours with increasing demands, yet struggle to maintain energy and focus over time.

Combining insights from elite athletics and human performance science, we offer practical tools to assess personal energy, recover effectively from extended effort, and create the conditions for deep flow. Leaders gain strategies to stay clear, grounded, and resilient—no matter what the pace of life requires.

Integrative Nutrition & Vitality

Led by certified integrative health coaches, this offering provides personalized, holistic support to nourish the body, restore vitality, and sustain high energy levels. Rooted in the principle of bio-individuality, we partner with individuals and teams to co-create nutrition and lifestyle plans tailored to their unique needs and leadership goals. It’s not just about what’s on your plate—it’s about cultivating the energy, mental clarity, and resilience needed to lead with presence, focus, and strength.

Holistic Health Coaching

This offering provides individualized support designed to meet each person or team exactly where they are. We begin with a guided visioning process to clarify your desired outcomes and long-term goals. From there, we work collaboratively to co-create a personalized wellness plan that supports your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Whether in one-on-one sessions or group settings, our coaching is rooted in a holistic, client-centered approach that honors each person’s unique path.

The result is sustainable growth and meaningful change aligned with what matters most to you.

Stress Resilience & Emotional Mastery

our approach to Stress Resilience and Emotional Mastery empowers individuals to stay grounded and clear-headed even in the most demanding situations. Dr. Thulani

I’m Thulani DeMarsay, and for nearly three decades, I’ve worked at the intersection of leadership development, contemplative science, wellness, and technology and innovation. Over the past 25 years, I have consulted with leaders from diverse sectors across the United States and, more recently, in West and Southern Africa. My mission is clear: to help leaders and teams maximize effectiveness while honoring well-being. I firmly believe that our ability to be effective is directly tied to our emotional, spiritual, psychological, and physical health.

I earned my PhD in Human Development, with a concentration in Technology, Media, and Innovation. My dissertation research focused on contemplative leadership, exploring how reflective practices such as mindfulness, meditation, silence, yoga, and other practices build resilience in leaders and help them thrive during times of disruption. My research revealed how these practices enhance decision-making, emotional intelligence, and organizational well-being, equipping leaders with the tools they need to navigate complexity and foster both individual and organizational resilience. My concentration further explored how organizations can leverage technology to advance their mission effectively.
